Low Energy Lighting

Low energy light bulbs have been available for many years and the technology has advanced to provide reliable long life bulbs in Low Energy Lightingvarious shapes and sizes available for all standard light fittings.

It is worth noting that traditional incandescent bulbs (mainly with tungsten elements) will be banned from domestic use from 2009.

There are equivalents available for all wattage ratings:

Traditional                       Low Energy

40W                                                   9W

60W                                                11W

75W                                                15W

100W                                               20W

120W                                               23W (Not for all fittings)

R50                                                   7W (Reflector type replacement)

R63                                                 11W (Reflector type replacement)

R80                                               20W (Reflector type replacement)

It is also worth considering upgrading to a higher equivalent replacement bulb if you find the light emitted from the low energy bulbs a little dull. For example if you have a centre room fitting with traditional 3x40W bulbs, you could replace them with 3×1 11W or even 3×1 15W low energy bulbs, as the wattage demanded & the heat generated will not exceed the design parameters of the fitting.

Low energy light bulbs are available from many outlets, but we recommend using recognised brand names such as Philips or Osram to ensure you get the best life out of  the bulb.

LED Lighting

LED Lighting is an emerging technology which will surpass the other lighting technologies in both energy efficiency and the light provided. At the moment they show you would use 50% – 90% less energy compared to a comparable halogen light. The expected life of an LED light is 50,000 hours compared with 2,000 hours for a halogen bulb.
LED lights are also more environmentally friendly in their production as they do not contain some of the harmful substances that other low energy light bulbs do – for example LEDs do not contain mercury whereas others do.
