Heating System Upgrades
The efficiency of a heating system is greatly enhanced by the types of system controls installed, these fall into the following
categories:
Programmers
- At the basic level a programmer will enable the heating system to be turned on & off at pre-set times. More complex programmers may enable zones within the property to be controlled at different times & even to different temperatures, but will require each zone to be an independent plumbing circuit.
Room Thermostat
- This is a temperature monitoring device located in a main living area. When the temperature set on the thermostat is reached, a switch contact is broken & the heating water pump & boiler are switched off.
Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRV’s)
- These are devices fitted to control the heating of individual radiators. They enable a fairly crude setting of temperature, when this is reached heating water no longer flows into the radiator. These devices are best fitted in rooms that are not constantly used and should not be fitted to all radiators as they have no direct link to boiler and pump & if all radiators are closed the system could be trying to work against a closed circuit.
Boiler Energy Manager
This type of control is used in conjunction with specially designed TRVs which controls the heating water temperature dependant on the TRV settings & room temperatures. It also senses the return water temperature & switches off the boiler if this reaches a pre-select level.
